Custom One-of-a-Kind Rockers
Evolution of a Rocking Chair
As almost every "new" idea starts out with inspiration from someone else's old idea, so did the design of this rocking chair.
My Dad was also a woodworker, and he taught me the basics when I was very young. When it came time for my Dad to finally retire after some fifty years of woodworking on furniture, my family had the task of cleaning out Dad's shop. Way back in the corner of the shop was an old rocking chair that my Dad had repaired but the customer had not returned to pick it up. Sitting in this rocking chair was like putting on an old shoe that fits your foot naturally and perfectly. That is how I wanted my rocking chair to feel.
The original design is just that feeling, but with the sculptural elegance of light and dark, curves that play off each other-yin and yang.
All of the parts, with the exception of the back and seat are based on the cabriole leg shape used on tables wehre the shape is cut with the same curve 90 degree opposed. The parts on the rocking chair are similar to the cabriole except the curves are different from each other.
The surfaces are flat so the light will reflect from the surface. The edges are left fairly sharp to accentuate the curve.
The square mortises add to the overall strength and rigidity of the whole rocking chair.
To paraphrase an old saying-the parts add up to more than the sum of the total.
In this case, a fine sculptural piece of furniture that will keep you rocking till you can't rock anymore-then pass this chair on to the next generation.
